The Institute for Grey Energy

collects and develops strategies for sustainable reconstruction and reuse of buildings in rural areas

The Institute for Grey Energy is a non-profit organization. Since 2021 we commit ourselves to a new evaluation of existing buildings. Our aim is to prevent the demolition of existing buildings. Instead, we want to find a new perspective for them. In order to do so, we engage from a scientific, architectonic and practical perspective with existing buildings.

Grey Energy / Embodied Energy

Embodied — or grey — energy refers to the primary energy required for the production, transportation and installation of building materials. In recent years, it has been increasingly considered as a value over the entire life cycle, for example when it comes to assessing the energy efficiency of buildings. However, we believe that there is more to buildings than just primary energy. Thanks to the interdisciplinary nature of our Institute, we look at the concept of embodied energy from a specific perspective. And from this we develop a clear stance – in research, in communication and in planning.
