Real Life laboratories
The heart of our activities are actual places. We call them real-life laboratories — as they enable us to instantly try out ideas, strategies and practices. Starting at a smaller scale is how we begin with the preservation! Each real-life laboratory is a project that is being explored, developed and worked on by at least one of our members. Therefore, they are not utopias, but proof to be socially and economically feasible.
Here, we focus on strategies to preserve, remodel and reuse these structures. Until now, preservation and transformation of such buildings are mostly linked to costly interventions with a high energetic expense. Due to this comprehensive remodeling approach, a reuse often seems impossible. By low-threshold concepts of appropriation an alternative to both – the comprehensive remodeling and the demolition – is formulated.

The former granary in Oßmannstedt (Thuringia) is pivotal point, home and the first project of the Institute at the same time. Here, a public centre of collaborative spatial development is being created, where we think about inclusive planning models for spaces beyond the metropolis.
